Anorexia… a new trend?
Looking at all the fat kids at the mall last week end I fail to see the trend. Kids at the food court were having no trouble eating. The more important issue here was what they were eating. Very little of what I saw was real food. Most of it was stuff made up of fat, sugar and salt.
My 8 yr old SON talks regularly about “watching” his weight and what he eats. He is spot-on on the growth charts, but it is concerning that he thinks about this so much. He eats, but he turns down seconds because it’s “not healthy”. The lectures at the schools aren’t much help. They talk about eating healthy, then serve up pop-tarts. Yes, pop-tarts are served in schools these days!
I hated every damn bite of those green beens, but sure as heck i ate them because what ever occupied my fickle attention at the time was vastly more important than sitting at the table being mad. So i over salted, used ketchup, drank 2 glasses of milk, whatever i need to do to choke those beans down.
Parents and the entitled attitude they give their kids are more of a problem than the media.
Blame the schools for your kids lack of desire to learn or succeed, blame the media for your kids distorted views, blame the community and their friends for their bad behavior. What ever you can do to assuage your guilt for being a terrible parent and help you sleep at night. Defer, deflect, deny….Blame everyone for your parenting fails and shortcomings. Keep on teaching our kids that personal responsibility is an antique and something to look back on with wonder and amusement.
